For maintained schools, the Department for Education has published non-statutory advice on the requirements to actively promote fundamental British values in schools and how this can be met through the general requirement in the 2002 Act to promote the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development of pupils. For independent schools, including academies, the requirement to promote fundamental British values is explained on page 18 of the guidance on meeting the Independent Schools Standards.
